My Favorite Herbs for my Dry Skin
As you may have gathered by now. I suffered from very dry skin and severe eczema.
I am allowing myself bragging rights because I worked really hard to have soft, smooth, glowing skin. From wearing long sleeves and basketball shorts in the summer, sometimes hoping to be seen as a tomboy, when really I just didn’t want anyone to see behind my knees., my insecurity levels were through the roof.
Before I get into my favorite dry skin relief herbs, I have to shoutout my melanin! Growing up, it isn’t cute to be ashy, so when I got to the age of someone telling me about myself, to lotion those elbows and knees, lotioning quickly and easily became an essential part of my routine. So when it came time for me to start incorporating my natural creams and ointments, it wasn’t that hard of an adjustment to do so as often as possible. Also I could literally feel my skin cracking if I didn’t lotion when I got the shower, so thanks skin for letting me know, brutally.
When I started deviating from Eucerin, Jergens, Aveeno, or even calamine, (those store-brought temporary relief options with the toxins, you know the stuff) and seek more natural alternatives, my skin was at its worse. Largely due to stress and anxiety.
Keep in mind my body inside and out had to purge itself of all those toxin physically and mentally. So not only did I have to find natural creams, I had to turn to a healthier lifestyle from eating cleaner, and exercising ( even my short morning stretch because I didn’t feel like doing a full work out) for this to work.
The very first herb I came across was Chamomile. I was making a Money anointing oil, because I was broke and obviously wanted to manifest more $$$.
Chamomile represents Money, Sleep, Happiness, and Peace amongst other great things. But I remember hesitating because I didn’t know how it would affect my incredibly sensitive skin. I looked up the skin benefits and gasped!
Anti-Inflammatory?! Soothing and gentle!? Greats for rashes, such as eczema?!! ( insert celebratory firework explosions)
CHAMOMILE
is rich in “azulene” which is an oil that provides aid specifically for inflammation and fever.
Chamomile is known for its calming agents. It calms the anxiety, nervousness and the digestive system, Promoting deep sleep, easing stress, and soothing achy, sore muscles.
COMFREY
Is another herb that is known for in anti-inflammation benefits. The “astringent tannins” in Comfrey create a protective barrier over the surface of wounds to promote healing.
It contains a compound called “allantoin” that promotes the stimulation of new, healthy skin cells!
MYRRH
Myrrh has powerful antioxidant properties that promote skin health. Be it unwanted blemishes, skins sores or rashes, the properties of Myrrh penetrates deep and works its way through to fade away those irritations.
Myrrh is also powerfully cleansing with it anti-bacterial properties. It’s so effective in providing aid in colds, asthma, digestive discomfort, and for me most importantly skin infections.
CALENDULA
I love Calendula because of how gentle it is. It’s an herb that I recommended for the whole family, starting with the wee baby.
Like Comfrey it promotes cell regeneration and growth, allowing your skin to repair. It keeps infections at bay and the flowers are known to relieve bruises, rashes, sores, and other skin infections.
And it is so gentle and soothing for babies, which give me so much relief due to my very sensitive and reactive skin. Not that it’s like a baby’s but if its safe for a baby it definitely safe for me!
OATS
I am talking milky oat tops, not for topically use, but for that internal health we need.
Milky Oats is one of the best nutritive tonics specifically for our nervous system. As ‘ve mentioned, I’ve learned that when my eczema was inflamed and at its most irritable, it was at a time where I was most stressed out, or anxious. It’s all connected ya’ll!
Milk oats effectively relieves, stress, exhaustion, nervousness, irritability and exhaustion.
It is a nervous system’s best friend!
LAVENDER
Is not only one of my favorite herbs in general, but it is my spirit herb!
Lavender is a mild antidepressant. It relieves stress, insomnia, and tension. It’s incredibly calming and full of love. It is said to strengthen the heart in stressful situations.
Lavender is antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic, so it is ideal for a treating a host of infections.
There are so many herbs in combination that are great for dry skin, but these are in my top 5.
They have supported me in my journey of getting rid of my eczema for good and they are the initial herbs that caused me to believe in herbal healing and the benefits of natural alternatives, when mostly everything in this system society was telling me otherwise.
I hope that you give these herbs a try.
